Unique Silversmithing Processes

Byzantine

The term byzantine comes from the Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, which is now Istanbul. It was a time of great riches, and byzantine jewelry was made from rich metals and served as a status symbol. There are various styles within this category, but bracelets and necklaces are made by handcrafting jump rings from gold or silver and “weaving” them into unique designs.

Keum-boo

Keum-boo is an ancient Korean technique where thin sheets of gold are applied to silver. The goal is to produce a diffusion bond through heat, after first depleting the surface area of a sheet of sterling silver. This technique is now used all over the world, and can be used to bond gold to many other metals beyond silver.

Patina

Patina is a process in which chemicals are applied to metal to create oxidation. It is a natural aging process, but for the purpose of jewelry can be sped up to create a unique appearance. It can be used on a variety of metals to create an aged or “filled” appearance in pieces of jewelry.
